Essential TikTok stats for 2021

In September 2021, TikTok announced that it had 1 billion global monthly active users,(a) placing it 7th in our ranking of the world’s most ‘active’ social media platforms.(b)

Meanwhile, data published in the company’s self-service advertising tools show that marketers could reach 824.5 million users aged 18 and above* on TikTok in October 2021.(c)

These latest figures indicate that marketers can reach roughly 10.4% of all the people on Earth using ads on TikTok today.(d)

However, because the company only publishes advertising audience data for users aged 18 and above*, TikTok’s actual audience reach rate will likely be higher than these figures suggest.(b)

*Note: TikTok’s self-service advertising tools allow marketers to target adverts to users aged 13 and above, but the company’s tools do not publish any advertising audience data for users below the age of 18.

How many TikTok users are there in 2021?

TikTok is one of the world’s top social platforms, but just how many people use TikTok today?

Data published in a recent company blog post shows that TikTok had a total of 1 billion monthly active users around the world in September 2021.(a)

Meanwhile, the company’s self-service advertising tools indicate that marketers could reach 824.5 million users aged 18 and above on TikTok in early October 2021.(c)

Note that the difference between these two numbers is primarily due to the fact that the company’s self-service advertising tools only report advertising audience data for users aged 18 and above in a selection of countries around the world, whereas the company allows people aged 13 and above to use its platform.

The company’s latest advertising audience figures suggest that 13.4% of all people aged 18 and above around the world use TikTok today.(d)

However, if we remove the people in this age group who live in China (where ByteDance offers a separate app – ‘Douyin’ – in place of TikTok) and India (where TikTok is still blocked), the platform’s addressable advertising reach rate increases to 24.1%.(d)

Which countries have the most TikTok users in 2021?

Based on the advertising audience reach numbers published in TikTok’s self-service tools in October 2021,(c) the latest data show that:

  1. The United States of America has 120.8 million active TikTok users aged 18 and above
  2. Indonesia has 87.5 million active TikTok users aged 18 and above
  3. Brazil has 72.3 million active TikTok users aged 18 and above
  4. The Russian Federation has 48.8 million active TikTok users aged 18 and above
  5. Mexico has 41.6 million active TikTok users aged 18 and above
  6. Vietnam has 39.7 million active TikTok users aged 18 and above
  7. Thailand has 35.6 million active TikTok users aged 18 and above
  8. The Philippines has 33.0 million active TikTok users aged 18 and above
  9. Turkey has 24.6 million active TikTok users aged 18 and above
  10. The United Kingdom has 20.1 million active TikTok users aged 18 and above

What’s the average age of TikTok’s users in 2021?

TikTok’s tools don’t offer a detailed breakdown of the platform’s advertising audience for all ages, so there’s no easy way to calculate the average age of TikTok’s active user base.

However, based on the latest available data, users aged 18 to 24 account for the largest share of TikTok’s advertising audience aged 18 and above.(c)

How many users does TikTok have in each age group in 2021?

Data published in the platform’s self-service advertising tools in October 2021 indicated that marketers could reach the following worldwide audiences using ads on TikTok:(c)

  • 369.5 million users aged 18 to 24 (44.8% of TikTok’s ad audience aged 18 and above)

  • 266.1 million users aged 25 to 34 (32.3% of TikTok’s ad audience aged 18 and above)

  • 109.9 million users aged 35 to 44 (13.3% of TikTok’s ad audience aged 18 and above)

  • 51.8 million users aged 45 to 54 (6.3% of TikTok’s ad audience aged 18 and above)
